In the stationary poses, snow clings to the otters’ fur. Otters may look a bit awkward when walking, but they are nothing but graceful as they twist and loop through the water, slide down snowbanks, or frolic in the fluffy white stuff. When they glide across ice to get to an opening and dive into the water below, it is because they depend on river creatures for their winter diet. They are more than just animals; many people consider them members of the family. Whether you prefer the silky scales of a corn snake or the warm fluff of a guinea pig, responsible pet ownership begins with familiarizing yourself with the animal possession laws and regulations in your area and finding the right pet for your life and needs. The U.S. Postal Service® celebrates a few of those favorites — corn, tomatoes, cantaloupes, and watermelons — with four stamps. Vintage produce advertising, including 19th- and early 20th-century crate labels, seed packets, and catalogs, inspired these stamp designs. Though not all produce was shipped in wooden crates, the stamp art is especially reminiscent of vintage crate labels.

The four stylized labels are drawn in the same color palette of red, black, green, and yellow-orange. To distinguish their wares from other producers, growers commissioned special crate labels from printing houses that employed some of the day’s best graphic artists. The flapping ears and the mouth seemingly curved into a smile have captured hearts the world over. But it’s more than that. They fascinate because they display a social complexity and full emotional range that reflect those of humans. Elephants, like humans, are one of the longest living land mammals. They practice teamwork, demonstrate the capacity for empathy and grief, and establish lifelong bonds of family. Herds are organized into complex matriarchal societies; calves are raised and mentored by the entire herd.

America’s feelings toward elephants have evolved since that 18th-century introduction. The relationship was hard on elephants: While Americans loved the floppy-eared giants, they were not always conscientious in doing their best to provide care and nurturing for the emotional and sensitive creatures. However, changing attitudes in the United States have increased the awareness of conditions of captive elephants, and enabled legislation to ban ivory importation and to support conservation efforts for elephants in the wild.

The Elephants stamp is being issued as a Forever® stamp in booklets of 20. Often associated with patriotism, Congress chose the bald eagle, which is native to North America, to embody American ideals like freedom, courage, strength, and power. A bald eagle is the centerpiece of America’s Great Seal, which is used to authenticate formal government documents, emphasizing the eagle’s importance as a symbol of the United States. On the seal, a bald eagle is shown supporting a shield on its breast, with 13 red and white stripes representing the 13 original states. Since then, bald eagles have appeared multiple times on stamps at many different rates as well as on stamped envelopes and stamped cards with designs as varied as an art deco illustration and a photograph of a carving from a wall plaque. For this stamp project, Noyes chose to go in a different direction, using naturalistic images rather than the stylized art of most past issuances.

The selvage features a photograph by Craig Goodwin showing an adult eagle perched behind two hatchlings in a nest.
